I am not a lizard

I seem to have transformed, over the last few days, into a character from a Somerset Maughan novel. Specifically, one of those frail women who droop over chaises longues, in states of perpetual fragility and weakness. It is, quite simply, both too hot and too humid. I can cope with one at a time, but both together... No. Nothing is getting done, I can't concentrate.
Dizziness, headaches, lethargy... If you want me, I shall be reclining on the daybed, cologne-soaked handkerchief in hand.
(It's not heat-stroke. I know the symptoms -- been there, done that -- and how to avoid it. I'm just no good at this kind of weather.)

How hot does it get where you live? This seems to be the year for heat and humidity together. It's atrocious.

A few years past, we had 0% humidity. We live in a desert region, after all.

Last week? 104 degrees with 60+% humidity! Argh! Thought we'd die!

We're definitely not in that heat band (which would finish me -- the one time I met it, I fainted). Sympathy.

I've been all pale and lan-gwid myself. The heat I can cope with (I have Italian ancestry after all) but the humidity on top of 30+c is making concentrating upon work a near impossibility and I have deadlines to meet!

I agree with you entirely (with the additional realisation that going out and walking, or even sitting in the sunshine eating a meal, is a direct trigger for FMS exhaustion). Maths brain doesn't much like the heat, either. Am not pleased.

I am glad it's not just me. I have achieved nothing the past few days: too hot, too humid, not enough good-quality sleep...

Me too. I have been lurking in the deep woods refusing to come out until the nasty sun thing goes away...

Ha! There is an advantage to living halfway up the Pennines. We have had neither the heat nor the humidity, thank goodness. It has been blissfully cloudy and a steady 21 degrees, reducing to a low of 13. Yay! I don't do well in heat, especially when combined with humidity. Lat time we played Bethlehem Musikfest it was 104F and something like 80% humidity. And THEN they switched on the stage lights, each one a 500W radiant heat source. I thought I was going to die. I sympathise with your decorous drooping. I trust you look pale and interesting rather than (as I do in that kind of weather) something closely akin to a beetroot - a sweaty beetroot.

If anyone *actually* looks pale and interesting in this kind of weather I propose we sweaty beetroots all get together and lie on them until they too are red, swollen and sticky.

It seems to be getting a little cooler at last. I'm doing rain dances here. So are both cats and that's not something you see every day.

I've been taking to my bed in the afternoon. Of course, the dogs have to be walked, and my American beta is making me doubt that I have any fanwriting competence, so I'm sulking too, but what the hey...

Hmm. Well, I disagree with your beta. You are a fine writer.

Yep, pretty much where I was a few weeks ago, in NYC. You have my sympathies...

I've been thinking of you, in fact.

The trio are suffering too (even though they have already told me very clearly on several occasions that they wanted the sun turned down now)and send messages of support.

Moon is complaining, Ish is avoiding laps but otherwise fine. Horus wants to cuddle. He isn't hot enough, apparently.

Yeah, we've got it too. When it's in the nineties and ninety-five percent humidity, I am a soggy old dog.

I hate hot'n'humid, too. Please help yourself to some of our 'toys with idea of being hot and humid and then does sudden downpour instead' - we have plenty.

Here it's cool with occasional fits of showers. I am making mental image of our clouds and weather moving across to you. Alas, Northern Europe weather usually moves West to East, so ...hard work. Buy I'll keep trying. Hope things improve soon. Hugs, M.

It cooled off here significantly this weekend. However, today, the humidity's back.

I can handle both heat and humidity together, as long as I have lots of water to drink, lot of t-shirts to change into during the day, and showers to take -- and most of all, if there isn't a lot of pollution and air-born toxins around.

My favorite though is what it used to be like in New Mexico hot and DRY! All you needed was to be out of the sun, a bit of moisture in the house via the swamp cooler, and you were great! It cooled off at night, and there were no mosquitos!

I don't deal well with temps over 88F, especially not with added humidity, but we have a/c so I can use that when needed and I do because I also function poorly in heat and humidity. However, 82 is perfect for me, but may be high for many.

Too high for me. Anything over about 55 and I begin to mutter. You're a remarkable woman!

My complete sympathy. I am miserable in hot, humid weather. I offer you a cold washcloth for the back of your neck.

I shall join the pity party, with 80% humidity (in the desert!) and 95F. And half of the house's cooling system nonfunctional.

I don't go beetroot. Just kind of wash out. And droop. I do droop.

Washing out is precisely the right image.
We need a writer commune, with horse space, somewhere nice and cool.

Too bad you can't come visit. San Francisco is sunny and cool, and Sunnyvale is sunny (of course) and not as hot as it's been. We don't get much humidity here ever (west of the Rockies the humidity drops dramatically).

I'm not good with hot and dry either, sadly (San Diego was appalling).

Humidity is *such* a pain. The heat alone is perfectly fine.

I understand that installing proper airconditioning in England to be used merely for a few weeks (if that) a year would not be efficient. An antique and diss-assemblable version is to order a large block of commercial ice, install it in a plastic or tin basin and arrange it so that a table fan blows over it in your direction. This actually works quite well.

I have a fan. It's helping a lot.

Daly City has been so foggy and cold that I've had the heat on during the day. If you feel like hopping a jet plane, do come on over, but bring sweaters.

I wish I could!

As an amphibious reptilian being who doesn't let the outside environment inside anyway, I'm not doing too badly. However, I do have a dehumidifier.

I grew up in the desert where it could get to 120F in the summer, but with very little humidity. Then I spent a decade and a half in the Midwest, where in the summer the heat + humidity would make you sweat as soon as you got out of the shower, and then you'd have to deal with knee- and waist-high snowfall in the winter. I'm acclimated to the extremes. But I still have days in which I am a delicate flower of Southern womanhood and long for a fainting couch and a pitcher of iced tea. Hope it cools off enough for you soon!
