Meme Day 4 (a week late, due to Life)

Day 1 - Ten random facts about yourself
Day 2 - Nine things you do everyday
Day 3 - Eight things that annoy you
Day 4 - Seven fears/phobias
Day 5 - Six songs that you’re addicted to
Day 6 - Five things you can’t live without
Day 7 - Four memories you won’t forget
Day 8 - Three words you can’t go a day without
Day 9 - Two things you wish you could do
Day 10 - One person you can trust

7 Fears or Phobias.
Only seven? I am Ms Wimp. However:

1. Small enclosed spaces, especially underground. I'm very claustrophobic and remain convinced that tunnels, caves, mines and so on are Out To Get Us.
2. Zombies. They squick and horrify me. I don't find them in any way entertaining or interesting, and the current fashion for them makes me shudder.
3. Crowds. Goes with the claustrobia.
4. Being in situations where I feel trapped: also part of the claustrophobia. I have to work quite hard on not panicking when, for instance, everyone stands up to leave an aircraft but people then don't move, or block the aisle faffing about.
5. Something bad happening to the marquis or the cats. I worry a *lot*. Phil is away again this week, in Alabama. They have guns! Etc, etc.
6. Internet mobs. Been on the receiving end in a smallish way, don't want to do that again.
7. Velvet. This is a silly one, but I really hate the feel of it, and having it in contact with my skin makes me shudder.

Skirt of the day: blue wedgwood

I don't share your reaction to velvet, but I understand it. Some people are that way about apricots...

I like the taste of apricots and also peaches, but their skins are a bit shiver-inducing.

Ugg, yes, Do Not Want the little furry things in my mouth. I much prefer to slice and eat them rather than taking bites out of the whole fruit.

My husband has that same shudder response to velvet. I'm fairly OK with it, but there are other textures that make my skin crawl. Felt is iffy and that green stuff they used to line cutlery drawers with really makes my skin crawl.

Texture is very important, often.

I think that green stuff is baize.

I'm fine with most textures normally, but when I had a temperature as a child all textures felt wrong and all fabrics were either too thick or too thin.

I'm OK with velvet, but cotton wool has a special horror when it's crushed and does that weird kind of high-frequency vibration.

Interesting phobias, could easily make a story prompt from those. Started to write a scene and then refrained. =)

Alabama? My old home state, long ago. Many wonderful people there and a beautiful state, but if the majority atmosphere amongst the human sort is still like it was when last I returned, this should be a very interesting report back ...

He's in Huntsville, where he's been several times. He likes the town but says he's seen the space museum enough now.

I have An Issue with tunnels and caves. And I think we all know who is to blame for that. "a cave into which they fit like segments of an orange"

What's that quote from?

Alan Garner has the most terrifying cave description. I forget if it's in The Weirdstones of Brisingamen or the sequel.

[identity profile] frostfox.livejournal.com 2015-03-07 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The quote is from Weirdstone, when they go through the Earldelving to get out of the mines.
I loved Colin's comment in Boneland, about nightmares about pressure on his shins, we all remember that he's an inch taller than his sister.

Oh, how funny. I wonder if I subliminally recognized it.

I am with you on many of those. I was able to do the tunnels under Novi Sad, but that is because they are mostly big and have lots of openings to fresh air and daylight.

I can grit my teeth for some tunnels, but the casemates in Luxembourg City defeated me. (I managed about 80% before deciding I needed to leave.)

Oh, elevators. And crowds. Maybe it's part of being short, for me, because I'm usually OK with tunnels and caves that will go somewhere.

Synthetic and even cotton velvets can produce nasty static and can be very unpleasant. Silk ones are very soft to the hand, though, rather like Ish.

This is going to reveal a phobia.

I find myself hesitating to read this post, because I have a horror of revealing anything personal and important on the Internet. I feel like we should be revealing these things slowly as we get to know each other better. Of course, we live thousands of miles apart, which will make that progression difficult.

But this meme may have crossed the line for me. I am all memed out!

Which is unexpected, to say the least. How can I turn away from a fellow "Nope, don't do zombies" person? (I saw the word zombie, shudder...)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2015-03-10 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm similar, I think. There are things I am able to talk about on line, and things I'm not. Some are just too close. I think though we get to know each through things like what we read and like and are excited about, too.
And anti-zombie solidarity!

I did read. I also don't care at all for velvet, and apricots are better peeled. But I do like velour, as long as the bolt was cut in the right way, so the nap smooths down the body. Took forever once to find the one burgundy top in town where the nap went in the right direction!
