I aten't ded

So it's been a while since I last posted. I'm not entirely sure why. Some of it was the familiar feeling I always have that my life just isn't that interesting. To me, living it moment by moment, it often seems to be a cycle of mundane things -- landry, cat-feeding, staring at the computer trying to find the right words. Christmas was quiet and pleasant, which was good, as 2014 was not, I think, my favourite year (though there were some excellent parts: waves to [livejournal.com profile] aliettedb, [livejournal.com profile] kateelliott, [livejournal.com profile] rcloenen_ruiz and Rhi). I didn't get the novel into shape, which was frustrating, and there were too many distressing personal things. Moving into 2015, things are easier for the marquis and me, but not for all those I care about, and that's a concern. And the books is still sitting there glaring, though after a brain-storming session with the marquis at the weekend, I now have a better sense of it.

What else? Tomorrow evening (Thursday 15th) I'm giving a talk on The Vikings to the Fulbourn History Society, at 7.30 pm, in the Fulbourn Centre, which should be fun. I like the vikings: it's a very dynamic field and there are new finds and ideas all the time. And in just over a week, we're heading off on the annual Cambridge fan ski trip. (I will try not to break anything.)

How's everyone out there in lj land? People are posting more, which is good to see and enthuses me to do the same, if only I can think of something to write about. Any suggestions?

Glad to hear that you aten't ded.

Spending as much time as we do in Viking central up in Orkney we're very aware of how much archaeology is still going on. It isn't all Neolithic.

nd I'm fascinated by some of the coin hordes that have turned up -keep wondering who hid them and why, and imagining the conversation that started 'I know its somewhere near here...' And who that chat was with.

I'm glad to hear that progress is happening at the wordface, however sidewise that progress is.

And write about whatever flows freely, please. This isn't the place for expenfing your writing efforts. I'm always interested in the detail of other people's lives, so mundane is fine by me. Or tell us about the skiing - you do this for fun?

Skirts! more detail, histories, the occasional photo (blue flags as in irises? sounds lovely...)

Have you read any books lately?

[identity profile] swan-tower.livejournal.com 2015-01-14 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want to see you post about what you think I (or anybody else) might find interesting; I want to see you post about what you find interesting. :-) With, of course, the caveat that you might feel you've been writing about that stuff enough already in other places, e.g. for work.

[identity profile] green-knight.livejournal.com 2015-01-14 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
So, so, seconded. I find there are very few things that bore me when they are talked about by people who love them - whether diving or hang gliding or any of a thousand things I have no interest in whatsoever - but find someone who loves it and who can share *why* they love it, and what they love about it, and you have a fascinating topic.

Glad you aten't dead!

Always happy to hear from you on LJ. Write whatever you want to write, momentous or mundane. I always like to hear about the writing.

Likewise. I am happy with the skirt mountain and cats, but you are always interesting on other subjects. I find my life interesting, though do not expect other people to do so, but am interested in other people's lives simply because they are not mine.

Hoping to get to Vikings but might end up collapsing, have been working much extra time this week...

Good to see you post - may the book flow smoothly and the weather cooperate with skiing!

Great to see you back - you helped form my LJ habit, and have always been one of the most interesting posters. Have a good ski.

I for one wish you or the other Cambridge fen would write about the ski trips. But none of you do! And I used to love skiing, it would be so pleasant to hear about especially challenging hills or that one thing that happened at the lift or even what you ate. Armchair travel is so much fun.

Thank you for the Christmas card! It is only mid-January and I am already profoundly tired of various obstreperously stupid people with whom I have to deal. However, the Year of the Horse is ending soon, so things may look up.

...my life just isn't that interesting. To me, living it moment by moment, it often seems to be a cycle of mundane things

You are very, very lucky. Long may this happy state of affairs continue!

How can you possibly think that something as momentous as feeding one's cats can be a mundane activity? The very idea.

[identity profile] lil-shepherd.livejournal.com 2015-01-15 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
I can't say much as I don't post half as much as on LJ or even Facebook as I should, but I always read what you post, even if I don't comment.

Anyhow, great to see the return of the skirt mountain.

Have a good time on mountains.

I too am guilty of not posting very often - most of my thinking is short enough to be expressed on Facebook (I really will get past the post-PhD writers' block one of these days, I'm sure!).

Tell us about the weather, your cats, anything at all, we'll be here to listen :-)

The cats say that reading about the feeding of other cats is the next best thing to being fed :-)

Still here, and happy to see you, too!

Well, by far the most interesting thing that I've done over the last few days is read Living With Ghosts. So, errrr, keep up the good work :-)

Still here to beta!

And waving, since I haven't posted in forever, either. New semester and all.

I aten't ded either - just checking in less regularly because life is being busy and interesting both. My 2014 was full of extremes. One of the extremely good bits was the time I spent with you.
