I read a article last month about one of the Saudi sheikhs, who own Canary Wharf and, apparently, News International. Quite ludicrously rich, and has made a point of employing women (his pilot is female): about 60% of his local staff are women, apparently, and he's one of the main proponents of getting rid of the driving ban.
I am surprised by Den Haag - how appalling, and as you say, unlike the Dutch. I had no harassment at all in C Asia, to the extent of being (like every other woman) quite comfortable about hitching lifts. I would never get into a car with a strange man here, but in C Asia it was an accepted way of getting about and people were always fine. The most overt harassment I've had was in Egypt and Turkey and I have to note that it was class related. But it also wasn't very threatening - chasing Turkish men down the street and shouting at them is an accepted way of dealing with it, because they run away when confronted.
