O, I have to add this: I was deeply shocked and dismayed that professional sf/f people behaved this way. I too had bought into the field's characterization of itself as progressive and meritorious, rather than retrogressive and cliquish. Mentioning the incident at the bookstore a few years later among sf/f people, I was flat out called a liar.
