The Way I Work Now

Here is a picture of my desk, as it is in my head every morning, neat and clear and ready for me to sit down and work:

I'll put the rest of this -- which contains more photographs -- behind to save your friends' page. This photo represents the ideal, it's how I like my desk to be. Everything I need in its proper place and nothing that is just cluttering the place, nothing that I really ought to file or sort or put away. About 30% of the time, it actually looks like this. Right now, as I write, it is very nearly like this, apart from the pile of CDs (in case Radio 4 lets me down), the camera and kindle (both recharging), a Mystery New Garment, and a couple of books. I'd like it tidier -- I really need to decide where to store the Mystery Garment and I should put the CDs away.
But there's one thing missing. Ladies and Gentlemen, I present you with the normal daily configuration of my work place:

Helpful Mooncat is Helpful.

I am pretty sure that there is a cat in the intray even in the 'tidy' picture...

No, that's a ferret glove puppet (given to me at WFC by [livejournal.com profile] fireun.

She's beautiful.

Neri's too big to fit on my desk - even tidy, so she perches on the window ledge just in front of me. That way she can keep an eye on me and the birds outside.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
All three of mine get on the desk, though so far I've never had more than two at a time. It makes things.... interesting.

[identity profile] desperance.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. I did look at that first one and think "Hang on, something missing..."

My own desk is the opposite of yours, a constant chaos of papers and aggregated Stuff - but even I can always find the cat.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
You have seen the usual state.
Occasionally I *can't* find the cat. Ish has a habit of sitting behind the lectern.

She's a very neat little bundle, isn't she.

My dsk is so cluttered with knitting stuff that the cats can't get on it--and neither can I.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
Knitting is a non-starter in this house, as Moon loves to help with it more than anything else. (She's fairly keen on my embroidery, too.)

lagilman: coffee or die (all ur desks r ours)

[personal profile] lagilman 2012-02-11 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
I can always find the cat(s). See icon...appropriately tagged "all ur desks r ours"

(the darker lump to the side is Pandora)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Mine often looks very like that, too. Though if he can, Ish prefers to be on my lap while I work.

That is a Very Helpful Cat. A very tidy one, too :D

Ferrets are fantastic. Now I have two lurchers I should probably get some ;-)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that could be a very energetic combination!

[identity profile] woolymonkey.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
Is she trying to be a mouse?!?!?!
Your desk looks like a lovely place to work.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
She likes to *sit* on the mouse. What she was doing at that point was alternating between scent-marking my elbow and trying to wash my fingers as I typed.

[identity profile] shewhomust.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Cats do furnish a room...

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
And redecorate it, too, given a chance.

[identity profile] teriegarrison.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
My stoooopid human's desk is so untidy that it is dangerous for me to set foot on. Doesn't stop me from trying. Ha.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Knocking things off it helps your human to be more tidy.
Mooncat.

[identity profile] sartorias.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I love those wooden shelf things--I need such a thing!

Resident kitting, of course.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
They run down both sides of the room, in fact and nearly floor to ceiling. It's a two-storey room -- my desk sits under the stairs up to the upper bit, which is where we sleep.

[identity profile] lanerobins.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! she looks so settled up there. Like there's never any doubt this is where she's supposed to be. I have a rotating crew, some of whom get removed faster than others, depending on behavior.

I love your wall color, btw.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
She is very determined. Ish also comes and sits on the desk, but his main goal is to get on my lap. Horus rarely gets on the desk, but he winds round the chair and then stands on me and interrupts.
They all want to supervise, don't they?

[identity profile] hawkwing-lb.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Such a fluffy supervisory cat.

I work in an armchair, mostly, and my Vlad's favorite trick is sitting on the arm of the chair and gradually creeping himself out over my lap until he's lying across both typing forearms.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Always a good strategy!

[identity profile] klwilliams.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, my first thought was, "Where are the cats?"

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know how I managed to tidy it without being overseen. They must all have been outside.

[identity profile] calendula-witch.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! envy. I miss my kitty. Mooncat is adorable.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
She's a very sweet girl, on the whole.

[identity profile] seph-hazard.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss Mooncat. She remains a gorgeous little bundle of fluff.

I live a gazillion miles away these days, of course, but I miss you and all. I'd love to come see you sometime, when I'm down. Or if you're ever up here!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be lovely. I just found a photo of you earlier today, in fact, and thought, 'I hope Seph is doing well.'

[identity profile] a-d-medievalist.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I really need to do something about my lack of proper workspace...

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-11 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I do love my alcove, I have to say.

[identity profile] piratejenny.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Quite helpful. :-)

[identity profile] llwheeler.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Mooncat is Adorable!

Also, I love your desk set-up. Looks both cozy and conducive to work.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-12 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a lovely workspace: it's nice and light, too, which I like.

[identity profile] barbarienne.livejournal.com 2012-02-13 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I wish I could get mine to take an interest in my work. He seems to regard the computer as the great enemy that Mommy pays attention to instead of him. He won't even come in and sit with me--it has to be a constant meowfest until I close the door. (And then it's a meowfest outside the door. He has a giant economy-size bottle of whine, I tell you.)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-13 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
:-)
Mine are like that about my laptop. It is Evil and must be resisted at all costs.

[identity profile] zaan.livejournal.com 2012-02-13 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, you have space!

I remember having a desk like that! In storage in Sacramento! Instead I am using a cubby thing with a keyboard drawer I refuse to use except as a surface when I need more space, which is ALL the time.
Love the desk ornaments, especially the fuzzy one. Bast loves to come sit beside me on the desk, which when it is only 3 ft long is a big problem.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-13 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a nice big desk, which I love.

[identity profile] cianthecat.livejournal.com 2012-02-14 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ah...now the desk is complete with a cat!

If I work from home my guys won't leave me alone.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-02-14 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yesterday, there was a point when all three of mine were 'helping'. There's usually at least one in the room -- on the windowsill or rug if not on the desk.
