Grr

So, my settings are set to UK English, but all of a sudden, LJ is flagging up my British spellings as 'wrong' and wanting me to use the American versions. Anyone know why this is happening, please, and how I can fix it? (I've already tried re-setting my language default, logging out and logging in again, as per LJ instructions, and it hasn't worked).

Turn off spellcheck? she said, not very helpfully.

(LJ is becoming a monster.)

Well isn't that just a pain in the ass? *sympathies*

I do love that icon!

They often flag my American spellings as wrong, too. I think their spellchecker is Russian.

There's no question that in Russia they teach American spelling and usage. I have this problem when I'm editing someone who studied in Moscow University. They don't even realise they're doing it.

When I was teaching English in Greece some students would mix American and British usage. I told them I didn't mind which they used but please don't mix them (that would imply being aware of which is which, also)
Though yesterday I was looking at a job description - in the UK - that said the applicant should have passed an exam in Math. (the UK usage being Maths).

I am hoping the 'Math' is a typo...

the grey area in the middle just keeps getting wider and wider.

:-)
So it may be a more general problem? That I can live with -- it's the thought that I've set something wrong and I fix it that drives me nuts.

What?!?!!

LJ, you have gone too far.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2012-01-13 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Turns out it was Firefox, which had reset the defaults in the last upgrade. LJ is exonerated, patted on the back and bought a drink as an apology.

Can't help as I use Firefox's spellcheck, which overrides LJ's.

Same here. When I post to LJ, I'm either using Firefox or Semagic, so I have no idea what LJ's spellchecker is like.

I'm using Firefox, too. Hmmm. It updated recently. I will go and look at its settings.

Not a fix but I use Semagic to post, with the UK dictionary installed.

[identity profile] woolymonkey.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
LJ has always done that to me. I don't really mind. I'm not good with spelling at the best of times. I have a US spelling username because the account was long up and running before anyone told me woolly has two Ls here.

But I do mind the Open University spellchecker that doesn't recognise its own course names or the abbreviation 'OU'. And has the nerve to refuse to send my emails until I click to confirm that, yes, I really do want to send it out looking like that. Grrr indeed.

Oh, that's just... How irritating.

[identity profile] deborahjross.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we should all switch to British spellings. The Marquise can offer a tutorial.
