Caspian, c. 1987-2003

Nine years ago today, we lost our first cat, Caspian, also known as Sir. He was a rescue cat, aged about 18 months when I got him in 1988, grey and white, clever, demanding, sneaky, affectionate, devious, bossy, adorable. He was the best cat in the world, our best cat, our Ur-cat. We still miss him.
Moon came along when he was about 12. He boxed her ears and hissed when she was too rambunctious, let her play with his tail and sleep next to him, taught her all the ways he had developed for communicating with his humans, who were too stupid to speak cat properly. She still talks to us with his signals. She taught them to Ish, when he came along four months after Sir died, to keep her company. Ish taught them to Horus, who is *his* cat (Ish has too much bounce for two humans and one sensible girl cat to deal with).
We will light a candle to our demanding, delightful, number one cat tonight, as we do on this date every year. I wish he was still here.

I think we love them all as much: it's down to differences in feline personality.
