My WFC schedule, and the Skirt Issue

It's less than two days till the marquis and I set off to WFC. He will be working in his employer's California office for the first three days of next week, while I head up to Portland to see various fine people. I'm looking forward to it. I'm due to get down to San Diego and the con on Thursday lunchtime and will be there till lunch-time or so on Sunday. One of the GoHs is Parke Godwin, whose books I've loved since I was in my late teens. I'm looking forward to getting a chance to hear him read.
I get to get my programme commitments out of the way fairly early on, too:

Thursday 27th Oct, 8 p.m, ROom Pacifica 2/3
The Role of Class in Fantasy and Horror
Science fiction often deals with class conflict. How does fantasy and horror pursue the same concepts? Are vampires and elves the bourgeoisie? Are werewolves and orcs the working class? Who are the working class heroes of our genre?
John Hornor Jacobs, Jeff Mariotte (M), Kirstyn McDermott, Kari Sperring, Kathryn A Sullivan.

This is the panel I particularly wanted, since -- as a Briton and a historian -- class is a subject that I think about a lot.

Now all I have to do is decide which skirts to take. The new green one is going, oh yes, but which others? Any requests/suggestions?

Skirt of the day: denim.

As a native San Diegan (lived there the first 40 years of my life, until I moved here), here's my recommendation for the skirts to take: your lightest summer ones. Maybe one slightly heavier one in case there's a chilly evening, but it's going to be quite warm there compared to here. Temps probably in the 70s (F).

And have fun in my home town! Say 'hi' for me! :-D

Sorry for the double-post. I didn't realise I wasn't signed in and thought I backed out in time, but alas. You can delete the 'anonymous' one if you like. :-)

Goodness: no problem.

[identity profile] joycemocha.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Probably won't get to see you in PDX, but if the opportunity arises...

[identity profile] aliettedb.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, have fun!
I have a bunch of relatives in San Diego, and my understanding has always been that it's really warm there (when most Vietnamese plants will grow without problem, you know you've hit warm climate)

[identity profile] desperance.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah. This is what Karen told us last year - "I know it's raining in the Bay Area, but San Diego will be warm and dry," she said. So we got Wetter Than I Have Ever Been, trudging determinedly around the zoo in the solid rain...

Ah, but you have N'ctle following you.

[identity profile] teriegarrison.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
A Vietnamese acquaintance once told me that San Diego has better Vietnamese food than most of Vietnam!

[identity profile] aliettedb.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
:=)
San Diego is a favourite haven for the Viet Khieu (=Vietnamese diaspora), so not surprised there!
Though Vietnam tends to have little decent meat (chicken or beef or pork) compared to Europe or the States. But the food there is... different, I guess? Comes from slightly different tastes, and slightly different ingredients. (haven't tried San Diego, though--only Paris, which has a reputation for the best Vietnamese food along with Sydney and San Diego).

[identity profile] desperance.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
(But does that mean they can grow the plant that I know as Vietnamese coriander? And would I stand any chance in the Bay Area? I can grow it here in Newcastle, in a walled south-facing yard...)

[identity profile] aliettedb.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean rau răm? The thingie that's on all the platters of herbs? I think that it's a very forgiving herb; someone (can't remember who) told me it will take most temperate climates. You need sun, though, I suspect, so as long as you're not in downtown SF...

[identity profile] aliettedb.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
And, uh, Andrea Nguyen lives in the Bay Area, and she manages to grow most Vietnamese herbs, including rau răm...

(she said it's even resistant to frost, so you should be doing fine...)

Ooh - thank you!

I am more and more thinking that the silk skirts are the way to go!

[identity profile] anna-wing.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
However, there may well be air-conditioning.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2011-10-21 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I am certain of it. I am packing cardigans.

[identity profile] sartorias.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Alas, I never notice anybody's wardrobe, but I so look forward to seeing you!

Will probably get there Friday (a recent death in my family means postponing going down there)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2011-10-21 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry to hear about that.

[identity profile] kateelliott.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
So sorry to hear, Sherwood. My condolences.

[identity profile] sartorias.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

Lucky you, getting to travel!

[identity profile] stina-leicht.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
oooooh! that's a great panel! i'm very sad we're scheduled opposite one another. [sigh] you'll have to tell me all about it later. i'd love to hear it since i write about class issues too.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2011-10-21 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Bar con later, definitely.

[identity profile] kateelliott.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
I will actually try to attend that panel. Also, can't wait to see you!!!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2011-10-22 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto!
I've looked at the rest of the programme, and Mr Godwin has a reading (noon, Sat), but that seems to be all, so Sat afternoon museums sounds good.

[identity profile] kateelliott.livejournal.com 2011-10-22 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's plan on meeting after Godwin's reading, then, and hitting Balboa Park for 4 hours!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/la_marquise_de_/ 2011-10-22 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an excellent plan.
