Just did my tax return. I think it's right. Now all I have to do is send it in, assuming I can find my online filing details.
The marquis held my hand. He made me create a spreadsheet.
I am so not good at things involving numbers. (Useless writer is useless, sigh.)
Goes away and shivers, possibly with beer.

Skirt of the day: lilac, was petticoat under Gudrun blue dress.

Oh, my. Much empathy from these parts. I hate all that, and 'assuming can find online details' is always a big hurdle for me.

This is the thing I dread most about being un/self employed/early retired. The thought that I might actually have to fill in a tax form.

Three of us failed to fill in Hilary's relatively simple tax form a few years ago, and two of us were studying for doctorates at the time ...

I feel for you too, I find the very thought stressful. When I lived in Oz, every body had to do them, and there were loads of accountancy services that would do them for you, for a price of course. But I always used one because they seemed to know so many more things you could claim for than I would have thought of, so it basically paid for itself.
We watched the first episode of Black Books the other night, where the main character has to do his tax form.

I found the whole self assessment thing so stressful that I actually pay my accountant a fortune to fill in a stupidly simple form.

The problem is that when I did it myself I took them literally and answered the question they asked instead of answering the question they meant to ask.

I ended up underpaying by 6K, which was subsequently noticed and asked for.

I have an acountant who has been a friend for 40 years. (I was at college with his wife.) He nods sagely and rolls his eyes to heaven when I deliver my annual accounts - i.e. a buch of receipts in an envelope with a list of ins and outs. He does the filing for me.

And when I got a random tax check a few years ago he helped me through it.

He doesn't charge me a fortune and I would gladly pay double if I had to.

This is why I've had an accountant for twenty years: to save me the tremble, gibber, panic. And to stand between me and the Revenue, if ever we had a problem. (We never have, yet. At least one more year to go, though...)

Check that your financial institutions will believe in you once you've moved. My current account doesn't - fortunately this isn't a problem yet. One of my credit cards is quite happy. A couple of others say they are, but don't seem to have translated this into Actual Action.

Doing the self-employed taxes in the US can be awful. I've had an accountant for years and years. He was worth the money. Then the bastard had to go and retire last year . . . But I do have a new guy lined up.

At least, when you've filed it, you'll have done it in time. One of my brothers tends to leave things until the very last minute - or just after!

The last tax return I did, they sent me a letter back telling me to stop sending them tax returns because my affairs are too boring. They're apparently only interested in people with noticeable amounts of money flying around. As a writer, with a presumably rather variable income, you're probably going to continue to hold their interest though.
