Word help

Can anyone give me a synonym other than 'prayer stool' or 'kneeler' for 'prie-dieu', please.

Do you mean the standalone kind that is like a one-person pew, or just the bit being knelt on?

Yes, that's the one.

I guess that's different from a hassock?

Yes: it's a wooden thing with a kneeler and a lectern type thing above it.

OED has "praying-desk" and "kneeling-desk".

Thank you, those are useful.

I've heard them called just kneelers
(http://www.catholicsupply.com/churchs/pews.html) or prayer benches or kneeling benches.

I could swear I left a comment yesterday...

Anyway, if you can't think of one you like, you could always just change it to a verb phrase, if appropriate...

I suddenly thought "misericord", but of course those are the little platforms the old and infirm were allowed to lean against whilst praying upright, not kneeling.
