Say what?

A male commentator on Woman's Hour has just come out with a statement to the effect that the pressure on men nowadays to get fit and looks nicer -- use moisturiser etc -- is imposed by women.
Nothing to do with marketing and the saturation of the market for imposing beauty standards on women, oh no. Nothing to do with big business looking for new outlets and new sources of profit, oh no.
Just Teh Women.
I am gobsmacked. And furious. And upset.

A *man* says something stupid, and that upsets you?

Strewth, you've been spoiled by your Marquis is what I'm thinking!

:-)

No, it's definitely women requiring men to tidy up, smarten up, dress better, get their hair cut, stop slouching etc. ... though usually those women are called "mother".

It used to be that the men that felt a pressure to look good, use moisturiser, guyliner etc. were doing so because they wanted to appeal *to other men* ... I think it's actually the pink pound that has done this ... (I may be semi-teasing here!) ... though you might as well blame the Italian men for making dressing well and personal grooming important (though of course it used to be important in the UK as well, we just seemed to lose it sometime in the 50s/60s and aside from occasional bubbles of New Romantics and Yuppies, we're only just getting back to trim haircuts, designer suits, quality shoes, decent aftershave etc. *as a societal norm* (there have always been mavericks, creatives etc. that held themselves to a different standard)
