There's a fine line-up of writers and stories in this. And yes, I'm in there too.

The first bar, created by the Sumerians after they were given the gift of beer by the gods, was known as the Ur-Bar. Although it has since been destroyed, its spirit lives on—in each age there is one bar that captures the essence of the original Ur-Bar, where drinks are mixed with magic and served with a side of destiny and intrigue.

My short story 'The Fortune Teller Makes Her Will' (title courtesy of the talented [livejournal.com profile] elisem) is to appear this March in the collection Tales from the Ur Bar, edd. Joshua Palmatier and Patricia Bray. It's a fantastic line up, and I am delighted to be included. I loved writing this story -- it's set in my favourite time and place (17th century Paris) and let me play with one of my favourite historical mysteries (the Poisons' Affair). There's a lot more information about the project on its website here. Go look: it's going to be a wonderful anthology. I only wish I could get to one of the promo events...

I shall be out and about in London next week. On Wednesday 21st April, I'm being interviewed by Chaz Brenchley for the British SF Association at their monthly London meeting. It takes place in the Upstairs Room in the Antelope Tavern, 22 Eaton Terrace, Belgravia, London SW1W 8EZ. It starts at 7 pm, and the nearest underground station is Sloane Square.

Then on Thursday 22nd April, I'm signing at Forbidden Planet London (Shaftesbury Avenue) along with Chaz, Ian Whates, Sarah Singleton, Ian Watson and other lovely people, to launch the new NewCon Press anthology The Bitten Word, which includes my vampire space beetle story 'COld Rush.' I have shiny news: I've been invited to join writers' collective The Write Fantastic by the illustrious [livejournal.com profile] jemck, [livejournal.com profile] desperance and [livejournal.com profile] glass_mountain and their colleagues. Of course, I jumped at it: the WF are a great group of really fine writers and I'm honoured to be allowed to join.

There's more -- to celebrate their Fifth Anniversary, TWF are holding a one-day event on Saturday 8th May at St Hilda's College Oxford. We have a great line-up -- all the WF members -- (Juliet E McKenna, Chaz Brenchley, Jessica Rydill, Sarah Ash, Deborah J Miller, Stan Nicholls, Mark Chadbourn, Ian Whates, Freda Warrington and Liz Williams -- along with special guests Geoff Ryman, Stephen Deas, Ben Jeapes, Mike Shevdon and Ian Watson. All the details are here: http://www.thewritefantastic.com/anniversary.html

This goes out to all of you, of course, but especially those in Oxford -- [livejournal.com profile] coalescent, [livejournal.com profile] timscience and [livejournal.com profile] green_knight. I hope to see lots of you there.
