The assumptions that everywhere in the world is or should be like the US, has the same problems as the US and should accept the same solutions as the US (all of these varying of course depending on the political beliefs of the writer) is a pervasive one in their society and not limited to the right wing or the majority race.

This particular case does seem quite exceptionally egregious in its parochialism and bizarre political myopia.
