Fascinating. I'd like to say that SA has a different kind of class structure, one more solidly built on racism,but because of a healthy influx of UK immigrants we do have an echo of what you have here.
I remember that same feeling as a child, of not being good enough to be in places, of having cheap clothes and eating the wrong food, and when it was brought home to me at school - when everyone had a good laugh because my father worked for the post office (Oh! How utterly hilarious!) rather than at a law firm or whatever.
And yes, it colours a lot of my interaction with other people, especially those I see as having been born into a higher class bracket, and how I am immediately defensive around them about every choice I make.
