I don't think that would necessarily apply in the case of Deverry, with an established author. I've seen other authors pick up with series that the publisher did not want to continue, and the readership for the most part didn't notice or care. All they cared about was whether the new book was out. I'm pretty sure an established author wouldn't have the review issue, either.

For someone starting out, yes, that's a concern, and a valid one for people weighing NY vs self-pub. Though, I will note that I know several authors personally who do both, and do equal amounts of promotion for both types of titles. Some of these were self-published first, some came to it later, some were well known in NY, others not so much, so there's a multitude of different factors. Reviews and awards are certainly still a concern, though.

But for me, as someone who is looking at the question of either self-publishing or not at all (NY is not an option for me for several reasons, not the least being that I have far too many women and queer folk for them to want it. As for small presses, I have worked with multiple and found it not worth the drama), I would honestly rather deal with the added promotion than beating my head against the NY wall, as I have collected several rejections for my work for basically anti-diversity reasons, I don't want to keep dealing with that, especially as dealing with the stress of NY is too much for me physically (stress excacerbates or flares my pain disorders). I've had my work published through small presses, so I know it doesn't suck, but the ones I had published were more conventional.

But, it's up to everyone. I wouldn't say it's the automatic choice, and that's something that annoys me about many people who tout SP. I think that there are valid reasons to want to go for it, and if someone is looking at the question of it not being published at all, then it is something I would strongly consider, especially when there is already an audience. Whether it is worth the work, is up to the individual to answer, but I thought I would mention at least as a possibility.
