Speaking personally, Ross wouldn’t have been my first choice for M/C. But (a) he’s not coming, and (b) to inflate a minor argument about a convention guest into a crime against inclusiveness seems bizarrely OTT. And battering people on Twitter about it is just ugly. As you rightly say, these are real people on both sides, who have real feelings which are being trampled over because the opportunity to stroke one’s self-righteousness is so damn tempting.
Problem is, that human beings have evolved to be drama junkies. A lot of people who live in safe, comfortable environments seem to be perpetually seeking out opportunities to work out our fight/flight responses. Some people get their adrenaline hits from Parkour, some like to start fights.
I’ve so had it with armchair warriors. Does twittering about Rossgate make you feel Powerful, and Important, and Righteous? Well, bully for you. And how lucky for you that crusading on the Twitter means you don’t have to look the people you’re bashing in the face.
And yes, as in most wars, it’s women that get hurt most. This war is stupid, and little, and hurtful. I hope the drama junkies get bored soon and leave it be.
