I'm not sure what voter demographics are here, in terms of class and wealth, but in the US the poor are less likely to vote, so I suspect we have similar issues.
The anti-immigration thing is stupid. Migrants are good for the economy. The current policies are all about pandering to the stupid, and, as you say, economically suicidal. The attempts to look at categories are limited, unwieldy and inept, too.
