That's a good point, and it's something I've wondered about, too. There's a hint of it in Shaun of the Dead, but over and over the narrative is that once the loved one is infected, they must be disposed of, because otherwise they will contaminate the whole, and that is too close to exclusion for intermarriage/sexual orientation/gender and so on to be at all comfortable.
