In fact they read an awful lot Langobardic to me: a people of horsemen 'helping out' the steward of an ancient empire during a war, get an invitation to settle in a province almost emptied by war and plague. Reminds me a lot of the Gothic war and of the Langobardic take on their settlement in italy as written by Paul the Deacon (never mind that the Longobards are known for burying horse and rider together).
