Well, the old-fashioned LJ-cut still works in regular entries, like it always has, but not in comments (where it never worked) - and you had used the correct syntax in the tag.

The LJ-spoiler is a very new tag - less than a month old, I think - and works both in entries and in comments. Tag and cut are intended to complement eachother's functionality, I believe.
