All England was pretty horribly colonised in the 11th century. The inhabitants were turned into second class citizens, their method of worship was changed (this is why there are so many Norman churches and so few Anglo-Saxon ones surviving) and oppressive laws went to the extent of making it a hanging offence to grind one's own corn.
