I think in terms of strategy it depends on what you want out of it. The people who are most annoying are going to behave that way no matter what you do. And they're not going to believe what you say, no matter what. So it seems to me you can 1) disengage quickly (sorry, I hve to go to the loo) 2) tune out (if you can't physically disengage) while keeping an eye out for a means of disengagement or 3) slap down (if you have the personality for it). In unpleasant situations like that I tend to pick 1).
Since I suspect you already do all those, I fear this is not helpful.
