New words today: 1191 (plus 535 yesterday)
First new line: Now they still slept while the settlement worked around them.

Which is kind of dull. Owain is listening and Idwal is speculating wildly. Gif and Coll (Idwal's dog) are getting very wet.

Writing meme day 13: What's your favourite culture to write, fictional or not?

17th century France and its analogues. It's where I feel most comfortable, where I find most resonances and images, storylines and hooks, oblique potentials. I am all about the locked cabinets and the oubliettes, the midnight duels and secret rendezvous, the coded letters and masked glances.

First new line: Uncomfortably, Owain said, ‘King Hyfaidd is just.’
Owain is dreaming...

Writing meme day 12: In what story did you feel you did the best job of worldbuilding? Any side-notes on it you'd like to share?
Well, both Living With Ghosts and The Grass King's Concubine are set in the same world, though in rather different places. But Merafi is the place I know best, as I've spent so long there -- 23 years and counting.

First new line: He was not drunk, not quite, although he had had several cups of Cadog’s mead, and the young monk himself had ended up far from sober.

Owain is startled and rather unsure, Gif is asleep, Teleri (ye heroine) is worried.

I seem to have wasted most of August, what with one thing and another. Will do better this month, I hope.

Meme question 11: Who is your favourite character to write? Least favourite?

My very favourite? Thiercelin. He's my favourite anyway, but he's very easy to write -- I always know exactly what he thinks, what he'd say, what he'd do. In Grass King, I enjoyed Qiaqia most, because she's so spiky, and the ferret women are huge fun. And I love Gif the dog! Least favourite is probably still Iareth Yscoithi, because she was so closed down and oblique. Trying to work out what she wanted used to drive me mad. Abbot Sulien is tricky, too, but for other reasons (not least the danger of silly errors).

New words today: 507 (I'm ramping back up -- will shoot for 750 tomorrow, then back to 1000-a-day).
First line written: The hut was damp and mean, though Owain had no doubt that it was the biggest in the village.
Owain is trying to snoop, Idwal is being tactless and Gif Has Found Pigs!
Writer needs to find out more about St Dogmael's, the least-documented foundation of 9th century Wales. I may have to give up and go look at it, though there's not a lot to see.

Garden is watered, birds and cats are fed, work-out is done. I have emailed the mystery agent (that bit is scary) and am gathering strength to email Nice Editor. I am suffering from restlessness and residual irritation with something someone wrote somewhere else. My life is so very gripping...

Skirt of the day: teal with white piping.
